General Description
Adapted from an International Committee of the Red Cross (2019) education kit, this kit has been developed to equip school-aged children with the basic school supplies required to attend school and so continue their ongoing learning within humanitarian contexts.
It contains a backpack and essential stationery for a single child/student and has been specifically designed to be easy to transport and distribute locally.
For settings where basic school supplies are required for both students and teaching personnel a ‘School-in-a-bag’ kit is also available on this platform.
Context of use
This kit is intended to be provided to school-aged children within populations affected by a humanitarian emergency, for example, children living in camp or host settings, and reception centres.
This kit has been developed to be used in the early stages of a humanitarian emergency when the resources available to local education services and the affected population are likely to be limited.
Although specifically designed to be used in areas affected by an acute humanitarian emergency, where appropriate, it could also be utilized in development contexts.
Scaling
This kit has been designed to be used by one school-aged child.
The number of each component included in this kit can be changed to meet local needs.
Where possible, agencies involved in the procurement and/or distribution of NFI supplies within a humanitarian setting should attempt to ascertain the average duration of any emergency supply kit used within the local context. This information can then be used to inform future procurement decisions on kit and component replenishment.
