Description

HOUSEHOLD PROFILE

The system is designed for three-person households in North Holland with an area of 90 m2 for 2-3 people. The system supplies the house with space heating of 3000 kWh/year and domestic hot water of around 2000 kWh/year. The system does not use a battery, as excess electricity is sold to the grid in periods of high solar radiation.

To efficiently size your system, it is essential to know the energy needs of the targeted house, and this can be done by simply obtaining the electricity bill for a whole year. In addition, using a rule of thumb can help determine the size of the heat pump. Moreover, simulation software programs help get detailed information on the heat and hot water supplied. There is several software programs found online that can assist, such as Geo T Sol and Polysun.

KIT DESCRIPTION

The kit is a green sustainable solution to supply the heating demands of your house. The PVT heat pump system is an efficient alternative to natural gas and is used for space heating and domestic hot water. This system includes a brine/water heat pump system connected to a PVT panel and a hot water tank.

The PVT system supplies the heat pump with electricity and brine to transfer heat efficiently to your house as space heating or hot water. This system will significantly reduce the carbon footprint of the house.

The diagram on the left shows the complete system of the house.

ASSUMPTIONS

The domestic hot water consumption is assumed to be 40 L/day/person. Therefore, an 8.5 kW brine/water heat pump is chosen to supply the heating demand.

In addition, 6 PVT monocrystalline panels with 350 Wp are installed on a 6 m2 roof area.

The table below shows an overview of the main equipment:

MAIN COMPONENTS

Groundwater heat pump

A heat pump is a device that transfers thermal energy between spaces, typically in buildings. A heat pump can also work as an air conditioner by moving heat from the building to the outside.

PVT panels

Photovoltaic thermal collectors (PVT) are hybrid solar photovoltaic thermal collectors that convert solar radiation into usable thermal and electric energy. PVT collectors combine PV cells which convert solar radiation ( sunlight ) into electricity, and solar thermal collectors, which transfer the unused excess heat from the PV module to a heat transfer fluid. This technology can achieve a higher system efficiency than solar PV or solar thermal alone.

Hot water tank

Storage tank for tap water; it acts as a heat accumulator and delivers hot water to your sink using its own heat exchanger during higher demands or with the already heated water coming from the heat pump.

Solar inverter

A solar inverter or PV inverter is a power inverter that converts DC to AC which can be used for home appliances or fed into an electrical grid.

This kit is a simple design of a heat pump system. However, for accurate system sizing, an expert HVAC personnel member must visit the targeted house and take different measurements.

COST OF THE SYSTEM AND SAVINGS

TOTAL EQUIPMENT AND INSTILLATION COST OF THE SYSTEM

The kit has a total cost of between 22000 € and 25000€. This cost includes the main equipment components, secondary equipment such as pipes, meters, mounting system, and other auxiliary equipment.

PAYBACK PERIOD

The payback period is an economic parameter used to define the number of years to recover the capital investments of the kit. For this kit, the payback period is at eleven years. In other words, the capital investments will be reimbursed after 11 years. The payback period also considers the total energy bought and sold from the grid.

Please refer to the solutions summary for a more detailed look at the simulation and system components.

TOTAL CARBON SAVINGS

The system is a green solution aiming to reduce natural gas dependency. Therefore, the kit offers a total carbon savings of around 4625 Kg. By utilizing solar thermal energy, the kit saves around 602 Kg, while utilizing the heat pump offers another 4023 Kg of Carbon.
