Description

This kit has been developed to support the provision of Sexual and Reproductive Health services by community-level healthcare providers.

This kit is intended for use by health personnel in their care of individuals requiring injectable hormonal contraception to prevent unintended pregnancy.

The contents of this kit are designed to be distributed to clients who have had previous training in the self-injection of Medroxyprogesterone Acetate for their own use.

The kit can also be used by trained personnel in settings where they have previously received training in the administration of subcutaneous contraceptive injections.

Context of use

Adapted from UN Population Fund (UNFPA) guidance, this kit is a complementary kit to the Community-level/health post kits intended for use by service providers delivering SRH care at the community health-care level kit series (UNFPA, 2019).

Together these kits have been designed to expediate the provision of vital Sexual and Reproductive Health care in acute humanitarian settings, primarily within Low and Middle income countries. They may also be useful to services addressing community healthcare needs in higher income countries during certain circumstances (e.g. natural disasters).

This kit has been specifically designed to complement the Oral And Injectable Contraception kit in settings where Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA-SC) was used as a method of contraception prior to the humanitarian emergency.

Scaling

This kit has been designed to assist in the provision of a community healthcare level service for a population of 30,000 people over a 3-month period.

The contents of the kit are based on the assumptions that 25% of the target population are women aged 15–49 years, or individuals in the same age group who may not identify as women, but for whom hormonal contraception may be a possible method of contraception (n=7500). It is expected that 15% of this group will be using contraception (approximately n=1125). Of this estimated number of users of oral or injectable contraception, 55% are assumed to use injectable contraceptives (n=619).

A rapid assessment of the local situation is advised to confirm the need for and suitability of reproductive health kits prior to kit procurement. This will include a review of existing healthcare resources and health facility capacity as well as an assessment of the expected health needs specific to the target population. If possible, this assessment should utilize available pre-crisis demographic and services data.
