Description

This pictorial instruction sheet or leaflet is intended to be included within each Basic Clean Delivery kit that contains single-use, non-sterile examination gloves. This is to provide kit users with clear and accessible information on the safe and appropriate use of these gloves within clean delivery practices.

Single-use gloves can only help to facilitate a clean delivery if the user understands how to use them correctly. To facilitate appropriate use, this leaflet/information sheet must clearly illustrate the sequence of steps required to use gloves correctly.

These steps should include:

  1. Appropriate hand hygiene prior to glove use
  2. Correct ‘donning’ sequence
  3. Correct ‘doffing’ (or removal) sequence
  4. Correct methods of disposal
  5. Appropriate hand hygiene following glove use.

The sequence of steps should be adapted according to the local context, with information sheets pre-tested prior to general use to ensure that they effectively convey the information necessary to help facilitate clean delivery practices.

The Glove Use Information Sheet (2009) by the World Health Organisation includes comprehensive guidance for healthcare professionals on effective glove use. This document includes an example of a pictorial sequence of how to use non-sterile gloves appropriately. This diagram can be referenced as an indicaton of the possible design and content of what a leaflet illustatrating correct glove use should include. Please see attachments for further details.

To ensure that any promotional material relating to Sexual and Reproductive Health is accessible and acceptable to the target community within which it is to be distributed, there are a number of factors that need to be considered. These include:

  1. Ensuring that the informational material is in a suitable size and format for method of distribution. For example, A5 or A6 for example for a small pamphlet.
  2. Selection of an appropriate quality of paper or material for print. For example, sometimes waxed paper, plasticized, water proof or durable material for the pamphlet may be required if meant to be reused by user.
  3. A pictorial information sheet is recommended with minimal use of text. If text is included, then this should be in all locally relevant languages with consideration of the reading and health literacy within different demographic groups.
  4. Leaflet choice should be sensitive to local cultural needs and preferences. For example, the leaflet's illustrations may need to be adapted to ensure cultural acceptability.
  5. The choice of the key messages and information within the leaflet should be guided by local health needs and resources. For example, in areas of high bloodborn disease prevalence this information sheet may need to be somewhat adapted.
