Description
This kit has been developed to support clinical delivery assistance at the basic emergency obstetric and newborn care (BEmONC) level in health facilities, ensuring the availability of clean and safe delivery and essential newborn care. This kit includes reusable equipment and is intended for use by trained personnel, such as midwives, nurses with midwifery skills, and doctors.
Context of use
This kit is intended for use within a health center or hospital-level clinical setting.
Adapted from UNFPA (UN Population Fund) guidance, this kit is one part of the “Primary Healthcare Facility Level (BEMONC) kits serving the needs of 30,000 people for 3 months”, and intended to be used in conjunction with Clinical delivery assistance, Midwifery supplies, Drugs and Disposable Equipment.
Together these kits have been designed to expedite the provision of lifesaving reproductive health services in acute humanitarian settings, primarily within low and middle-income countries. They may also be helpful to meet the primary healthcare needs in higher-income countries during certain circumstances (e.g. natural disasters).
A rapid assessment of the local situation is advised to confirm the need for reproductive health kits prior to kit procurement. This will include a review of existing healthcare resources and health facility capacity as well as an assessment of the expected health needs specific to the target population. If possible this assessment should utilize available pre-crisis demographic and services data.
Requirements
Some of the equipment in this kit requires sterilization for reuse. Sterilizers require power for operation. Sterilizing equipment and a reliable power source are prerequisites for this kit.
Scaling
This kit is designed to serve the needs of 30,000 people for 3 months. Its components should not be divided. One kit should be procured to each primary and referral healthcare center.
